PADUCAH - Hoping to even things up after their loss to the Lady Tornados at home earlier this month, the Lady Marshals fell short losing to Tilghman 61-49 Friday.
The Lady Marshals found themselves trailing by 11 points at the end of the first quarter but battled back to trail by just three at halftime after out-scoring Tilghman 13 to seven in the second quarter. Trailing 27-18 in the second quarter, a free throw and field goal from Taylor Meadows pulled the girls within seven at 29-22. Mariah McKenty's basket right before the buzzer cut the Tilghman lead to 29-27.
Missed free throws and three point attempts hurt the Lady Marshals in the second half as they started the third quarter trailing 29-26 after a bucket by McKenty. Behind the shooting of Chelsey Shumpert, the Lady Tornados quickly stretched their lead back out to 12 with just over three minutes to go and trailed 44-34 at the end of three quarters.
The Lady Marshals battled in the final quarter but were only able to get within eight points of Tilghman losing by 12 at the final buzzer.
Both teams struggled from the three point arc with the Lady Marshals hitting just one of 13 attempts and Tilghman going zero for nine. Chelsey Shumpert, Tilghman's 5'3" senior guard, had a double-double night with 30 points and 12 rebounds while Meadows led the Lady Marshals with 18 points. Toni Fehrenbacher, Alex Brown and Alyssa Barnard all had eight rebounds each in the game.
The Lady Marshals are now 17-7 on the season and will be in action again on Friday, February 1, against Graves County on Homecoming night at Reed Conder Gymnasium.
