Marshals host Big Orange Classic Saturday at Preston Cope Field

Marshall County’s baseball team went 1-3 in games this past week starting with an 11-10 walk-off loss to Graves County on Tuesday in Mayfield. They played three games on Saturday at home in the Big Orange Classic, losing the first two to Benton, Ill. 8-4 and Fort Zumwalt, Mo. 13-0 before finishing up the day with a 25-0 win over Community Christian Academy.

Tuesday against the Eagles (8-1), the Marshals trailed 8-6 after five innings and took the lead on a four run sixth inning on a single by Gavin Clark and three run double hit by Riley Henson.

Leading 10-8 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles tied the game up on a two run single off the bat of Coby Mullins and earned the walk off when Drake Defreitas headed to home plate on a fly ball out hit by Cole Hayden, scoring the winning run on an error.

Henson went 2-for-4 for the Marshals with a double and four RBIs and Clark had two hits including a double and RBI to lead in the Marshals 11 hits. Mullins led the Eagles at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.

The win went to Defreitas who surrendered eight hits and six runs while striking out eight. Jace Driver took the loss, pitching the final two and two thirds innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs and striking out three.

Saturday at Preston Cope Field, the Marshals trailed Benton, Ill. 6-0 before putting up two runs in the bottom of the third. Riley Henson led off with a double, Chase Shelton reached on an error and Maddox Cope brought the first run in on a fly ball out. Gavin Clark drove in a run with a single.

The Marshals cut the Benton lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fifth, Cope scoring on a single hit by Preston Holman. Benton added two more runs in the sixth to lead 8-3. The Marshals mustered one more run in the seventh, scoring on a single hit by Reese Oakley.

Each team collected eight hits. Holman and Kaden Merrick led the Marshals with two each.

Kannon Dunn on the mound for the Marshals against Benton, Ill. Dunn took the loss allowing seven hits, three earned runs while striking out five over five innings.

Fort Zumwalt silenced the Marshals bats and they managed just one hit off their trio of pitchers who combined for 13 strike outs in the 13-0 shut out.

Kannon Dunn recorded the lone hit in the fifth inning. Houston Johnson and Preston Holman reached base on errors in the second and seventh innings and Dunn took base on a walk in the seventh.

This was Fort Zumwalt’s first games of the season at Marshall County and they improve to 3-0 with wins on Saturday over Benton, Ill. (16-0) and CCA (18-0).

In their final game on Saturday, the Marshals beat CCA 25-0 in two innings on 14 hits.

Matthew Henderson drove in four runs while going 2-for-2 with a triple. Talen Rose went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs and Tyler Swoope was 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs. Hayden Gray struck out six to earn the win over two innings while allowing no hits.
