It was Senior Night on Friday at Carroll Traylor Stadium before the Marshals third game of the 2020 season and first district game against Daviess County. The Panthers were 1-1 coming into Friday’s game and the Marshals at 0-2 were looking for some positive momentum.
The Marshals last win over Daviess County came in 2011, 16-0. They fell to the Panthers last season 51-6 after a five-year break when the Marshals moved to Class 5A. Daviess County went on to finish 2019 with a record of 5-6 and return several of their top performers from last season.
Daviess County scored on their opening possession of the game on a long pass from junior quarterback Joe Humphreys to junior wide receiver Max Dees, the extra point good for a 7-0 lead at 10:03 in the first quarter.
The Marshals had nice field position on their next possession but were forced to punt and the punt was blocked, giving the Panthers the ball at the Marshals 40 yard line. They scored on the first play from scrimmage on a 40 yard pass to Decker Renfrow and the extra point attempt good gave them a 14-0 lead at 8:59 in the first quarter.
On the Marshals next possession, they put together a couple of nice gains by Logan Parker and Kameron Bowerman along with a pass for gained yardage to Talon Smothers but they turned it over on downs to Daviess County who went on to score on a seven yard run by sophomore Bryson Parm to go up 21-0.
Daviess County finished out the first quarter on a 28-0 lead after scoring on a 20 yard run by Parm.
The next possession for the Marshals was highlighted by a pass from Quinn Smith to Logan Reese for a gain of 40 and a quarterback keeper by Smith for a gain of 15 yards. Facing fourth and goal from the one yard line, the Marshals scored their first touchdown of the season when senior Garrett Parker crossed the plain to get on the board and they trailed 28-6.
Daviess County went up 35-6 on their next possession, scoring on a 60 yard pass to Jack Ball. The Panthers final touchdown of the first half came on a one yard pass to Carter Hamilton to take a 42-6 lead at halftime.
Reese received the second half kick for the Marshals and had a nice return along with a horse collar penalty on the Panthers, giving them good field position, but they turned it over on downs and Humphreys with a keeper went 61 yards into the end zone to put Daviess County up 49-6.
Daviess County scored their final touchdown of the game on a nine yard run by sophomore Jack Ball for the 56-6 win.
In post-game comments, Marshals Head Coach Steve Etheridge said the Panthers are a really good football team. Etheridge said what hurt his team were the missed tackles and blown assignments adding, “we need to get things cleaned up as players and coaches”.
Daviess County amassed nearly 500 total yards of offense behind the play of junior quarterback Humphreys who passed for almost 300 yards on 14 of 23 completions and five touchdowns.
The Marshals had 180 yards of offense with most of those yards on the ground. Garrett Parker leading the way with 69 yards and the touchdown.
Next week’s game at Henderson County will not be played due to COVID-19 issues. The Henderson County game has been reschedule for Nov. 6 and the home game scheduled against Ballard Memorial on that date has been moved to this Thursday, Oct. 1.
