Stokes passes 1,000 career points in Marshals win over Prodigy Prep

With his first basket of the game, Tyler Stokes scored his 1,000th career point. Stokes led the Marshals with 28 points in their 79-67 win over Prodigy Prep in Saturday’s CFSB Classic.

For the second time this season, the Marshals played Prodigy Prep, Fla. in Saturday’s CFSB Classic. In the Dec. 7 Hoopfest game, the Marshals came from behind to go up 62-61 in the fourth quarter but Prodigy Prep finished it out with an 84-76 win. It was the Marshals who took control from the start Saturday and pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 79-67.

Tyler Powell opened the game with a three followed up by a basket by Bryce Flatt and Powell’s second field goal for a quick 7-0 lead before Prodigy Prep’s Emmanuel Maldonado hit from behind the arc to put them on the board.

Tyler Stokes, who led the Marshals in the win with 28 points, hit his first three of the game to put the Marshals up 10-5 and with those three points, became the 19th member of the 1,000 point club  just four days after teammate Tyler Powell reached the mark.

Knowing he was close to the milestone before the game, Stokes said his mind was on the game and not on his 1,000th point and like Powell, happy to now have his name listed among the best scorers in Marshall County program history.

“I had to go out there and play the game”, Stokes said. “You can’t worry about statistics…you’ve got to go out there and get the win.”

Head Coach Terry Birdsong said he was proud of Stokes and his commitment saying, “Joining the 1,000 point club, he established himself as one of the top big guys to ever play in the Marshall County program.”

After the milestone 3-pointer, the Marshals took their largest lead of eight points in the first quarter following Jay Nimmo’s three. Maldonado, who scored 34 points against the Marshals in the Hoopfest, hit two straight from beyond the arc to cut the lead to two points at 15-13, the Marshals closing out the quarter on a 21-18 lead.

Zion Harmon, double-teamed by Julian Newman (4) and Emmanuel Maldonado (3), scored 23 in the Marshals win. Harmon scored his 2,000th career point in the Marshals win over Graves County on Friday.

Prodigy Prep led 22-21 early in the second quarter, their first lead of the game, and went up 26-21 before Nimmo hit a three to cut the lead back to two. Julian Newman scored his first points of the game to put Prodigy Prep up 28-26 and another three by Maldonado made it five points. Bryce Flatt, Stokes and Nimmo scored the final six points to put the Marshals up 33-31 at halftime.

Zion Harmon, with just two points in the first half, made up for it in the third quarter scoring 15 of the Marshals 24 points and they took a 57-55 lead into the fourth quarter. The final quarter belonged to the Marshals, opening with a 9-0 run and going on to out-score Prodigy Prep 21-12 to finish out the win.

Their second game in the CFSB Classic is Monday at 3:00 against Fulton City (6-5) then on to Friday for a district double-header against Calloway County (12-7).
