Top high school talent on display at Friday’s Hoopfest

DRAFFENVILLE – The first of four games in the Hoopfest Friday was a contest between University Heights in Hopkinsville and Jemison, Alabama. Jemison (formerly J.O. Johnson) is led by eight seniors including the current Alabama Mr. Basketball and Alabama bound John Petty.

University Heights led 16-15 at the end of the first quarter but trailed Jemison 34-31 at halftime. Jemison out-scored University Heights 39-31 in the second half to pick up the 73-62 win led by DeVonte’ Lanier with 17 points and Petty with 12 points, 10 rebounds. Travion Hollowell of University Heights led all scorers with 24 points.

Game two Friday featured Prolific Prep, California and Hamilton Heights Christian, Tennessee. Prolific Prep won 72-62 behind 36 points from Duke signee Gary Trent, Jr., the current No. 8 player in the nation according to ESPN. Seniors Paul Scruggs is headed to Xavier and Abu Kigab with to Oregon.

Hamilton Heights’ lineup includes Kentucky commit Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and his cousin Nickeil Alexander-Walker who has signed with Virginia Tech. Shai and Nickell combined for 44 of Hamilton Heights 62 points – Nickeil led with 23, Shai scored 21.

Tech Academy of Canada featuring the Maker cousins made their second appearance in this year’s Hoopfest playing Hillcrest Prep from Phoenix, Arizona and have the #1 player in the nation, 7’1″ DeAndre Ayton who is staying home next season and playing for Arizona. Ayton did not play in the game.

Hillcrest Prep won 62-52 behind 18 points from senior Virshon Cotton who hit four 3-pointers. Shakwon Barrett led Tech Academy with 19 points, a former Findley Prep player and native Canadian. Teammate Matur Maker is undecided on colleges with interest from Indiana, Wake Forest, Arizona and Kansas.

Oak Hill Academy and Tennessee Prep played the final game on Friday with the Warriors picking up an 80-55 win. Oak Hill is loaded with talented players and is the current second ranked high school team in the nation under Head Coach Steve Smith in his 32nd year at Oak Hill Academy.

Oak Hill seniors who have committed are Ty-Shon Alexander – Creighton, Devontae Shuler – Ole Miss, Lindell Wigginton – Iowa State and Billy Preston – Kansas. Matt Coleman is entertaining offers from Duke, Stanford, Kansas and Texas. Their big man, 6’10” junior David McCormack, who transferred from Norfolk Academy, has 21 schools showing interest.

Former Murray State and current Iowa State Head Coach Steve Prohm was on hand Friday to watch his future freshman Lindell Wigginton. Wigginton led Oak Hill in the win with 19 points.
