CALVERT CITY, Kentucky – Terry English, Josh Harris, Tait Davenport, Brian Worley and Matthew Rollins were feature winners as Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway opened the 2015 season Saturday.
Hometown driver English, from Benton, Kentucky, led from the outset in the 20-lap Late Model main event after the initial start saw pole starter Tanner English, Terry English’s son, surrender the pole starting spot when his left rear tire failed before the first lap could was completed.
The winner, a former track champion at KLMS, outdistanced runner-up Ashley Newman of Ripley, Tennessee, with Tim Brown of Benton third. Tanner English worked his way up to finish fourth, and Levi Kissinger finished fifth.
In the Modified division, Josh Harris of Utica, Kentucky, moved around pole starter Trent Young on the third lap of the 20-lap race and pulled away to the win, with Young, a six-time winner at KLMS last year, second. Paul Miles, Brian Shaw and Todd Riley rounded out the top five.
Davenport, also of Benton, Kentucky, outdueled reigning KLMS Crate Late Model champion Jeff Walston at the start and went on to win the 20-lap Crate main event. The two drivers battled for supremacy as they did in 2014, when Walston won seven features and Davenport six.
Brent Lewis, Evan Taylor and Kevin Poole were third through fifth.
In the Stock Car division, Brian Worley was the winner in a 15-lap main event. Michael Hendrickson was second, followed by Bradley Hobbs, Wyatt Hill and 2014 track champion Mike Lentz of Herrin, Illinois.
KLMS added a fifth division, Pure Stock, for this season and Matthew Rollins of Princeton, Kentucky, took the inaugural victory. Randy Swift challenged Rollins but was the victim of two spinouts and ended up fifth. Mike Welch, Lisa Wadley and Phillip Dunn were second through fourth.
Racing continues at KLMS on Saturday night, April 18, with a special feature for Crate Late Model competitors paying $2,500 to the winner. Also on the program will be races for Late Model, Modified, Stock Car and Pure Stock drivers.
